Vioxx, a non steroidal anti inflammatory prescription medication,
was pulled from the market on September 30, 2005 by its manufacturer
Merck & Co., Inc. for its link to a variety of serious and dangerous
cardiovascular side effects. The following are some of the
serious side effects associated with Vioxx, and brief explanations
of each:
Anemia - When a person lacks the amount of red blood
cells needed to provide the blood with an adequate amount of oxygen
the body becomes very tired, and in serious cases the heart may stop
working due to overworking.
Hypertension - Also known as high blood pressure,
this dangerous condition may result in strokes, coronary heart disease,
and other serious health problems.
Heart attack - When a person experiences a blood
clot, the blood flow to the arteries may become reduced or stop completely
and may cause the heart to stop working.
Stroke - When blood flow to the brain is interrupted
brain cells may die, affecting many functions such as speech and physical
movement. Many stroke victims are permanently paralyzed on one entire
side of the body.
Gastrointestinal ulceration - Stomach ulcers may
result from use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as
Vioxx. The effects of gastrointestinal ulceration include pain, swelling,
bleeding of the stomach, and obstruction.
If you have experienced any of the above side effects and are currently
taking Vioxx, you should seek medical attention immediately. It has
been recommended that all patients who are currently taking the prescription
drug talk to their physicians about another course of treatment.
